SY Zefira (2011-2013)
“Experienced European owners brought together a top team of Dubois, Fitzroy and Tessier to produce their dream yacht: sleek, sophisticated and impressive under sail. This 49.7m fast cruising sloop is the largest sloop Dubois Naval Architects has designed without a flybridge. She is of aluminium construction with a bulb keel and a maximum beam of 9.95m. The interior, styled and drawn by Remi Tessier, features a combination of bleached timbers and white leather which results in clean modern lines and provides bright comfortable living areas.”

“We do everything with love. This is more than sport – it is passion for something that is living, like the sea. This is not a boat that Dubois could sell us, it is our boat, and we have loved it from a baby, to now, when it is complete and perfect.” Paola and Salvatore Trifirò

ZEFIRA
“We built a series of 14 boats, from the early seven metre yacht (a French Calife) to the various Jongert, from Italy (Cantieri di Pisa) to New Zealand. Today we finally own Zefira, a magnificent, lean aluminium and carbon 50 metre yacht. A project in which, together with our designers Ed Dubois, Malcolm McKeon and Remi Tessier, we put our heart.” Paola and Salvatore Trifirò
An artist only believes a painting or piece of sculpture is complete when every detail exists in absolute perfection. He must feel that there is nothing he can add or take away that would make his work better. So it is for Zefira, a boat considered by her owners to be a work of art, an example of flawless excellence and an entire world of its own within which every detail has been conceived and perfected by artisans. The 50 metre sailing yacht was commissioned by an Italian couple who sought the design expertise of Dubois Naval Architects and Remi Tessier, and chose Fitzroy Yachts of New Zealand to build her.

ZEFIRA
“Behind Zefira was for a cruising yacht that’s first class in terms of her luxury and onboard comfort, but still has superb performance and prowess under sail. We paid meticulous attention to both light and space. Aesthetically, we embraced the challenge of keeping the superstructure lines as low as possible, whilst still giving perfect visibility from the saloon interior: being able to see the horizon both seated and standing up was a priority. Aesthetically, we embraced the challenge of keeping the superstructure lines as low as possible, whilst still giving perfect visibility from the saloon interior: being able to see the horizon both seated and standing up was a priority. As was giving the skipper excellent views too. There’s only a slight change of level between cockpit and saloon, so there was no need to raise the deckhouse roof. The yacht has two steering positions – the exterior bridge aft and below decks. Once we’d established these priorities – visibility and availability of interior space – we had to work them into a hull that delivers significant performance in all kinds of wind conditions and points of sail.” Ed Dubois

Each venture is a new beginning…
July 2012, Zefira visits North Cove Marina
“…Finally to New York Harbor, real goal of our journey, not without problems. Actually, Zefira’s mast is 211ft, including our YCCS burgee highness. The Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge is 228ft high but in summer, because of the heat of the metal, the steel cables can to stretch from 228 to 217ft.. and Zefira is 211ft…!!!! We charge the pilot on Vedette America (no better name!) at 4,30 pm, he‘s in contact with the Coast Guard, approaching the Bridge they check once more the data, the situation is not simple… Sea is calm but other ships stop a while, to avoid making waves. Feeling in a movie, we pass under, our burgee nearly touching the bridge. Pilot and his collaborators are thrilled too. Sunset is approaching, and the Port Authority allows Zefira to spend the night moored at Statue of Liberty, the first permit since September 11. The emotion is overwhelming.… The “Thousand lights of New York” are and remain unforgettable. Entrance in NY Bay reminds us of Yeats’s verses “And therefore I have sailed the seas and come to the holy city of New York (Bizantium)”. The following morning Zefira enters in NY, mooring not without difficulty in the narrow North Cove Marina. One week among the skyscrapers goes by quickly, a lot of people coming to admire our creature day and night. Actually, Zefira had already had the honour, in July, to be feasted at New York Yacht Club, at the presence of Ed Dubois and owner Paola Trifirò: the giant photos of Zefira sailing were passing on the big screen, among the historical decor of the NYYC and the shining displays of all models of the America’s Cup boats. Unforgettable moments! In the morning of the 16th of July Zefira leaves, with skilled manoeuvres, the Dennis Conner’s North Cove Marina (VIDEO) and owners too leave towards Europe.” Paola Trifirò Siniramed
