Owner Paola Trifirò recalled how the crew is an integral part of the sailing experience itself. “For me, the boat was the sea, the wind, and the crew. Without a crew, if you want to sail the world, you can’t do anything. The enjoyment of the boat and discovering the sea was always tied to the crew. Perhaps there needs to be a school for owners, too. The less you learn, the more difficult it is, especially from a safety perspective. But this also applies to the engine; just look at the Coast Guard’s interventions every day for minor accidents. Where do we put prevention?” And to address the training gap, Trifirò suggests: “We should encourage professional schools for those who want to work on boats 15-20 meters and longer, but also for those who want to own a small sailboat but don’t because they think it’s difficult. Learn prevention and have professional crews. Another key aspect on board is the kitchen, so everyone can feel comfortable.”
